The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit primary business identification number mandatory for anyone importing into or exporting from India. Issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), it is now integrated with the entity’s PAN (your IEC is your PAN). Without an IEC, goods cannot clear customs, and exporters cannot claim benefits like duty drawbacks or GST refunds.
Eligibility & Criteria
- Limits: No turnover limit. Mandatory for any value of commercial import/export.
- Forms: ANF-2A (Application form on the DGFT portal).
- Penalties: No specific penalty for not having it, but trade is legally impossible without it. Failure to update/renew (annual update) can lead to the IEC being “De-activated.”
